SSALT Cherokee Marsh-0550

UPDATE: This photo will be up for auction January 17, 2009 to benefit the Friends of Cherokee Marsh. Lakeview Library, Sherman Plaza. The Friends of Cherokee Marsh are having their Annual Membership Meeting at 10am, which will also be host to “a costumed, historical re-enactor of the surveyor who charted the Cherokee Marsh environs.” The NSAG show is currently displaying in the Mana Cafe, Sherman Ave., and a few select pieces will move to the library for the auction (which will be after the re-enactment… noon-ish?).

SSALT Cherokee Marsh-0550

It’s obviously not snowing here in Madison (not yet anyway), so yes, this wasn’t taken this summer. I was asked to submit one from this past winter, showing off some of the beauty that’s available year round. Usually, I am struck by the diverse life abounding there. But on this occasion, however, it was completely quiet, completely serene. I stood at the edge of the Yahara River for a long time, in the eerie silence that follows a fresh snowfall.

You can see the snow-fence enclosure structures lining the shore setup on ice. Once the ice melts, the structures will drop to the bottom. This will protect the aquatic plants from the animals and fish until they are more established. The fences will eventually deteriorate, leaving only the plants.

This photo will be hanging in the Warner Park as part of the “Art of the Marsh” show sponsored by Friends of Cherokee Marsh and the North Side Artists Group (NSAG). It will be hanging at the Warner Park Center, Northport Dr (next to the Mallard’s Baseball Duck Pond). It will be on display there with other NSAG members’ work, then go “on tour” to Lakeview Public Library, Sherman Plaza, for November and December then to Mana Cafe in January ‘09.
