My buddy Paul and I took our sons camping (in a Thunderstorm, wind and 90+ heat index) I took only my 50mm lens, both freeing and limiting. Limiting, because it’s a fixed lens, and we spent quite a bit of time in the tents and even under the picnic table for a little while (well, not Paul and I so much). Freeing because, it’s all I had and didn’t have to think or worry about it…it’s lightweight (hiking), and pretty fast (f1.4), knowing it would be dark with the storms and firelight shots.

This is the first photo i took during the trip. The kids were distracted with some toy dumptrucks (and the rain had pretty much turned the campsite to one big wet sandbox), so Paul and I started in on the tents before the next rain shower. I almost stepped on the poor guy, amidst moss and forest floor debris. he was about 1-inch tall. The overcast day lent to some excellent colors and I could expose for details underneath the fins as well. Never NOT go shooting just because it’s overcast or even a little rainy.
